The McNab Shepherd is a working stockdog with roots in the ranching country of Northern California. Developed in Mendocino County during the late 19th century, the breed was shaped by the practical demands of livestock work, rugged terrain, and the people who depended on capable dogs to manage their herds and flocks.
The story of the McNab begins with Alexander McNab, a Scottish immigrant who settled in California in the 1860s and established a sheep ranch in the Sanel Valley, near present-day Hopland. Drawing on his experience with Scottish shepherding dogs, McNab sought dogs capable of handling the demands of ranch life in California. Dogs brought from Scotland became foundational to the development of the McNab, with additional breeding and selection taking place over subsequent generations.
Following Alexander McNab’s death in 1901, his son John Liddle McNab continued the family’s ranching and breeding legacy. Other ranchers and stockmen throughout the region also contributed to the development and preservation of these dogs. Rather than being shaped primarily by formal show standards, McNabs were selected for their practical abilities, sound working instincts, and usefulness in the field.
As McNabs became established throughout Northern California, they earned a reputation as capable and versatile stockdogs. They worked sheep across open range and challenging terrain and were also valued for their ability to handle cattle. Their usefulness extended beyond individual ranches, becoming an important part of the agricultural communities of Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa, and neighboring counties.
The demands of this environment helped shape the type of dog valued by ranchers: athletic, intelligent, responsive, and capable of working with purpose. McNabs developed a reputation for versatility, with working styles suited to different livestock, handlers, and ranch conditions.
For generations, practical ability remained central to the breed’s development. Ranchers valued dogs that could do the job, and breeding decisions were often guided by working performance rather than appearance alone. This tradition helped preserve the McNab’s identity as a functional working breed.
Although the McNab originated as a ranching dog, its abilities extend well beyond traditional livestock work. Today, McNabs can be found participating in herding, canine sports, search and rescue, and other activities that make use of their athleticism, intelligence, and trainability. They can also make devoted companions in homes that understand and provide for their needs.
The McNab remains a working breed at heart. Individual dogs vary in temperament and intensity, but the qualities that made these dogs valuable to early California ranchers continue to be appreciated by those who work with them today.
At Allegheny McNabs, we believe understanding the breed’s history is an important part of appreciating the dogs themselves. Preserving the McNab means respecting its working heritage while making thoughtful decisions about health, temperament, and the future of the dogs we produce. Our goal is to honor the qualities that made the McNab a valued American stockdog while supporting its future in both working homes and active partnerships with people.
